Finalmente, Bereswinda consiguió disuadirle de ese crimen, pero para ello tuvo que prometerle que enviaría a su hija a otra parte sin decir a qué familia pertenecía.

Bereswinda Cumplió la primera parte de su promesa, pero no la segunda, ya que confió la niña al cuidado de una campesina que había estado antiguamente a su servicio y le dijo que era su hija. Como los vecinos de la campesina empezasen a hacerle preguntas embarazosas, Bereswinda la envió con toda su familia a Baumeles Dames, cerca de Besancon, donde había un convento en el que la niña podría educarse más tarde. Ahí vivió ésta hasta los doce años, sin haber sido bautizada, aunque no sabemos porque razón.

Por entonces, San Erhardo, obispo de Raisbona, tuvo una visión en la que se le ordenó que fuese al convento de Baume, donde encontraría a una joven ciega de nacimiento; debía bautizarla y darle el nombre de Otilia, y con ello recobraría la vista. San Erhardo fue a consultar a San Hidulfo en Moyenmoutier y, juntos, se dirigieron a Baume, donde encontraron a la joven y la bautizaron con el nombre de Otilia. Despúes de ungirle la cabeza, San Erhardo le pasó el crisma por los ojos y, al punto, recobró la vista.

Otilia se quedó a servir a Dios en el convento. Pero el milagro del que había sido objeto y los progresos que empezó a hacer en sus estudios, provocaron la envidia de algunas de las religiosas y éstas empezaron a hacerle la vida difícil. Santa Otilia escribió entonces a su hermano Hugo, del que había oído hablar y le pidió que la ayudara como se lo dictase el corazón. Entre tanto, San Erhardo, había comunicado a Adalrico la noticia de la curación de su hija. Pero aquel padre desnaturalizado se encolerizó más que nunca y prohibió a Hugo que fuese a ayudarla y que revelase su identidad.

Hugo desobedeció y mandó traer a su hermana. Un día en que Hugo y Adalrico estaban en una colina de los alrededores, Otilia se presentó en una carreta, seguida por la muchedumbre. Cuando Adalrico se enteró de quien era y supo porque había ido, descargó su pesado bastón sobre la cabeza de Hugo y lo mató de un golpe. Pero los remordimientos le cambiaron el corazón, de suerte que empezó a amar a su hija tanto cuanto la había odiado antes. Otilia se estableció en Obernheim, con algunas compañeras que se dedicaron como ella a los actos de piedad y a las obras de caridad entre los pobres.

Al cabo de un tiempo, Adalrico determinó casar a su hija con un duque alemán. Otilia emprendió la fuga. Cuando los enviados de su padre estaban ya a punto de capturarla, se abrió una grieta en la roca, en Schossberg, cerca de Friburgo en Brisgovia y ahí se escondió la santa. Para conseguir que volviese, Adalrico le prometió regalarle el castillo de Hohenburg. Otilia lo transformó en monasterio y fue la primera abadesa. Como las montañas eran muy escarpadas y hacían difícil el acceso a los peregrinos, Santa Otilia fundó otro convento, llamado Niedermunster, en un sitio más bajo, y edificó una posada junto a él.

Se cuenta que la santa, poco después de la muerte de su padre, vio que sus oraciones y penitencias le habían sacado del purgatorio. San Juan Bautista se apareció a Otilia y le indicó el sitio y las dimensiones de una capilla que debía construirse en su honor. Se cuentan muchas otras visiones de la santa y se le atribuyen numerosos milagros. Después de gobernar el convento durante muchos años, Santa Otilia murió el 13 de Diciembre, alrededor del año 720.

Martirologio Romano: En Dorat, en el territorio de Limoges, Francia, san Israel, presbítero y canónigo regular, que fue de gran ayuda al obispo en la predicación de la Palabra de Dios. († 1014)

A este bienaventurado agustino le veneran como santo los canónigos regulares de Letrán y los fieles de la diócesis de Limoges, pero es muy poco lo que se ha registrado sobre él. Sólo contamos con algunas generalidades vagas o edificantes, como ésta: «Fue un buen ejemplo para todos, concurría asiduamente, a los divinos oficios, se preocupaba por atender a las necesidades de los enfermos y dedicaba toda su atención al celebrar los sagrados misterios de acuerdo con los ritos de la Iglesia ...».

En la ciudad de Dorat, en el Limousin, Israel era miembro de los canónigos regulares; allí fue promovido a chantre y ascendió luego a familiar de Aldoín, obispo de Limoges, a quien acompañó a la corte de Francia. A pedido de los canónigos, el papa Silvestre II lo envió como preboste al monasterio de San Juniano, en la alta Vienne, donde hizo progresar a la comunidad tanto temporal como espiritualmente, puesto que acabó con las divisiones y partidismos, reformó la observancia y reconstruyó la iglesia. Después, Israel regresó a Dorat y se dedicó a la formación de san Walterio, el que fuera abad de L´Estrep. En Dorat el canónigo Israel volvió a ejercer las funciones de chantre y allí murió, el 31 de diciembre de 1014. Su tumba llegó a ser famosa por los milagros que se obraban en ella.

San Finiano de Clonard fue el más distinguido de los santos de Irlanda en el período inmediatamente posterior al de San Patricio.

Los relatos de su vida están llenos de contradicciones y anacronismos. Tres siglos después de su muerte, se creía que había pasado largo tiempo en Gales, siendo ya monje.

Se cuenta que estuvo algún tiempo en el monasterio de San Cadoc de Nantcarfan, y que acabó milagrosamente con las plagas que echaban a perder las cosechas de la isla en el estuario de Severn, llamada actualmente Flatholm.

Entre otros muchos milagros que se le atribuyen, se dice que salvó a sus huéspedes de los piratas sajones, haciendo que un terremoto se tragase el campamento de los invasores. San Finiano tenía la intención de hacer una peregrinación a Roma con San Cadoc, pero un ángel le disuadió de ello y le ordenó que volviese a Irlanda.

Aunque es imposible probarlo en detalle, parece que San Finiano estuvo bajo la influencia de San Cadoc, San Gildas y otros monjes ingleses, por la importancia que le atribuía a los estudios y el énfasis que ponía en la superioridad de la vida monástica.

A su regreso a Irlanda, el santo fundó varias iglesias en Leinster y las escuelas y monasterios de Aghowle y Mugna. En este último monasterio se tramó contra él una conspiración, en efecto, Cormac, el hijo del reyezuelo del lugar, indujo a su hermano mayor, Crimtan a que persiguiera al santo, con la esperanza de que así pereciese en la empresa. El siniestro plan de Cormac tuvo éxito hasta cierto punto, ya que Crimtan trató de expulsar a San Finiano por la fuerza y, al hacerlo, se rompió la pierna.

El monasterio más importante de San Finiano estaba situado en Clonard de Meath. Poco después de la llegada del santo a ese sitio, fue a visitarle un pagano de cierta edad llamado Fraechman, que era un mago muy famoso. San Finiano le preguntó si su arte procedía de Dios o de alguien más. Fraechman replicó: "A vos toca averiguarlo". Finiano repuso: "Muy bien. Decidme entonces dónde se halla el sitio de mi resurrección". "No en la tierra, sino en el cielo", fue la respuesta. El santo le dijo: "Tratad otra vez de adivinarlo" .Fracchan volvió a dar la misma respuesta. "Tratad otra vez", le dijo Finiano levantándose de su asiento. Entonces el mago, comprendiendo que San Finiano se estaba burlando de él, le respondió: "El sitio de tu resurrección es el sitio en el que estabas sentado".

La réplica del mago resultó cierta, ya que la sede de Finiano era Clonard, donde tuvo el santo muchos discípulos, y sus enseñanzas produjeron una verdadera resurrección de la religión y el saber. Según se dice, llegó a tener 3,000 discípulos, por lo que se le llamó "el maestro de los santos de Irlanda", o simplemente "El Maestro" y se dijo de él que irradiaba bondad y sabiduría para iluminar al mundo, lo mismo que el sol desde lo alto del cielo".

Varios santos muy posteriores debieron su santidad a las enseñanzas de San Finiano. Fue famoso por su conocimiento de la Sagrada Escritura y su celebridad de exegeta se perpetuó durante muchos siglos en Clonard. Pero la escuela bíblica sufrió mucho durante las invasiones de los daneses y de los normandos; finalmente, a principios del siglo XIII, el monasterio de Clonard dejó de ser el centro religioso de la diócesis de Meath y se transformó en monasterio de agustinos, en cuyas manos estuvo hasta el siglo XVI. Tanto en sus viajes misioneros como durante su estancia en Clonard, San Finiano, que murió durante la epidemia de fiebre amarilla, a mediados del siglo VI, ofreció su vida por sus compatriotas, la fiesta de San Finiano de Clonard se celebra en toda Irlanda. Aunque suele venerársele como obispo, es dudoso que lo haya sido.

Bartolo o Bartolomé Bompedoni de Mucchio nació en 1227 en el castillo feudal de los Condes de Mucchio, cerca de San Gimignano, en la provincia de Siena. Desde joven se consagró al servicio de Dios contra la clara oposición de su padre, que nunca toleró en su hijo este género de vida. Bartolo se trasladó a Pisa y fue durante un año huésped de los benedictinos de San Vito.

Habiendo entrado en la Orden Franciscana Seglar fue a Volterra, donde el Obispo quiso que fuera sacerdote y lo destinó primero como capellán a Peccioli, luego como párroco en Pichena. Atacado de lepra, se retiró al leprosorio de Celiole, cerca de San Gimignano, donde vivió veinte años y mereció, por la paciencia demostrada en soportar tanto tiempo el mal, el sobrenombre de “Job de la Toscana”.

Nunca se acaba de admirar la maravillosa florescencia espiritual que brotó en el siglo XIII tras la palabra y el ejemplo de San Francisco, madurada en la Primera Orden de los Hermanos Menores, en la Segunda Orden de las Clarisas y sobre todo en la Terdcera Orden, querida por el Santo de Asís para los laicos y casados, gracias a la cual la enseñanza franciscana penetró y renovó la vida espiritual de la sociedad de la época, la vida civil y el tejido social.

A la Tercera Orden de San Francisco pertenecieron personajes encumbrados en la historia como San Luis IX rey de Francia, Santa Isabel de Hungría, San Fernando, rey de Castilla, figuras excelsas en el arte y en la cultura, como Giotto, pintor, y Dante, poeta.

¿Qué decir de tantos que vivieron en un plano modesto pero no menos tenaz a la sombra de estas grandes plantas? Terciarios como el Beato Luquesio y su mujer Buonadonna, comerciantes de Poggibonsi; San Ivo de Bretaña, abogado de los pobres; Santa Margarita de Cortona, pecadora y penitente; la Beata Humiliana dei Cerchi, asceta y sin mancha. ¿Qué decir de figuras todavía más modestas y hasta pintorescas, como el Beato Novelón, escrupuloso y devoto zapatero de Faenza; el Beato Pedro Pettinaio, silencioso mercader sienés de los peines, y finalmente el Beato Bartolo Buonpedoni de Mucchio, cerca de San Gemignano?.

Enviado como párroco a Puchena, durante veinte años maravilló y conmovió al pueblo por su celo excepcional, por la extraordinaria caridad para con los pobres. A los cincuenta años enfermó de lepra, se retiró a un leprosorio, donde se distinguió por su paciencia en la desgracia, o más bien se podría decir serenidad, felicidad y “perfecta alegría”, lograda en la dura tribulación.

Murió a los 73 años en 1300, sepultado en San Gemignano en la bella iglesia de San Agustín, Bartolo Buonpedoni de San Gemignano sembró en el mundo, no los gérmenes de su enfermedad, sino el gozo y la serenidad de su alma franciscana.

San Pió X aprobó su culto el 27 de abril de 1910.
